harpsichord, organ and fortepiano
Alex Mastichiadis is an early music keyboardist, specialist in historical performance, and experimental sound artist based in Greece. Born in 1990 in Adelaide, Australia, he began piano lessons at the age of seven after moving to Athens. His early fascination with Baroque music led him to the harpsichord, which he found to be a more direct and expressive medium than the modern piano.
In 2008, he commenced his formal harpsichord studies at the Department of Musical Studies at the Ionian University, under the guidance of Katerina Mihopoulou. After completing his bachelor’s degree in 2014, he pursued postgraduate studies at the HKU Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands. There, he studied harpsichord with Siebe Henstra and ecclesiastical organ with Reitze Smits. During his time in the Netherlands, he served as an organist at the Zeist Church and performed extensively throughout the country.
Throughout his career, Alex has participated in a wide range of early music seminars and masterclasses, working with esteemed musicians such as Caesilia-Concert, Wilbert Hazelzet, Heiko ter Schegget, Antoinette Lohmann, Nico van der Meel, Alessandro Ciccolini, and Bob van Asperen. His performances span solo recitals and ensemble collaborations across Europe.
In addition to his work in historical performance, Alex is actively involved in experimental music and free improvisation. He regularly appears on the Amsterdam stage for Free Improvisation and is a frequent performer in both Utrecht and Amsterdam’s contemporary music scenes.
Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the Ionian University, where he also gives seminars on early music. His academic and artistic pursuits continue to bridge the historical and the experimental, offering a fresh perspective on early keyboard music and beyond.
